Inside Angels’ Place: Mary Donthianmawi

There are many wonderful people working with our children at Angels' Place.  Here is a chance to meet one of them...Mary Donthianmawi, Nurse and Supervisor.

Mary's job is to take care of the children's physical and mental health as well as provide guidance in their daily lives.  Her role is extremely important because of the challenges many of them face coming from very poor families with little or no access to healthcare.  Most of them have been largely neglected by caregivers who were barely able to care for themselves.  Some had no caregivers at all.

Mary faces many challenges when working with children from such difficult circumstances.  Motivating some of the kids is not easy but with consistent loving care and a good dose of patience, she has been very successful, even with some of the toughest cases.  Mary finds tremendous reward in helping these troubled kids blossom into healthy thriving young adults.  In her own words..."I love helping the orphan children in whatever way I can.  Giving medical care, helping with their studies and teaching them right from wrong."

Mary is an invaluable asset to Angels' Place.  Not only does she provide the routine healthcare the children need, but she also provides the emotional support and structure required for them to flourish.  We are very blessed to have her as a member of our team caring for all our precious Angels.

Inside Angels’ Place: Englian Valte

Meet Englian Valte, the Superintendent of Angels' Place.

Englian's job is to look after the welfare of the children and staff.  He sees himself as the link between the administration, staff and the children.  As a retired bank professional, he is now the longest serving superintendent to work at the orphanage and he is one of our greatest assets.  He is reliable, trustworthy, and has a strong commitment to fulfilling his responsibilities to the best of his ability.  Though he faces many challenges in his role, especially with problem children with low self-esteem, he finds it all worthwhile when he sees them blossom with proper nourishment, love and good care.  His greatest motivation is his desire to give children hope, especially those who have none.

In Englian's own words:  "I consider myself privileged to serve the Lord in Angels' Place as one of the staff.  I am happy and contented."

We, at the James Connection, feel tremendously blessed to have such dedicated and hard-working individuals like Englian working with our children.  Thank you Englian!

Angel of the Week: Chingngaihsang

This cheerful young lady came to Angels' Place last year, soon after losing her father to liver disease. Her mother, who was desperately poor and unable to care for her child, brought her to the orphanage; a painful decision no mother should ever have to make. But there was no choice if her child was to have a future.

Sang, as she is known by her friends and caregivers, remembers her life before Angels' Place as "miserable". "My father was sick for a long time. We had no proper meals, no warm clothes." School, of course, was an impossible dream reserved for those lucky few who could afford the books and uniform.

Today, Sang proudly wears her school uniform as she trots off to school with her friends, one of her favorite things to do. She is in Class 5 and loves learning, particularly about science. She dreams of being a teacher or a nurse someday and knows she is getting the education needed to realize her dreams. Even though she is not with her mother, a loving circle of friends and caregivers give her a sense of "home". "I am lucky to be in Angels' Place," she reports. "I am happy here."

Sang knows how blessed she is to find a home at Angels' Place. So many of her friends she left behind are still struggling to survive, like she once was. There are hundreds just like her on the waiting list to get into Angels' Place alone. Very few will make it out of the destructive grips of poverty without help from those of us who can afford to open doors for them. Won't you consider opening a door to success for a child like Sang?

Angel of the Week: Niangdeihkim

Kim wants to become a doctor one day.  This was a dream she dared not consider before she came to Angels' Place in 2013.  If she was lucky, and because she is smart and motivated, she might have hoped to be a street vendor or clean hotel rooms.  But the truth is, her intelligence would surely have been wasted on a menial job with little stability or reliable income.  More likely, she would have ended up with no consistent work at all, barely surviving and struggling to take care of her own family, just like her mother.

But, today, Kim is writing a different story.  A story where she could be a doctor.  Thanks to her sponsors and Angels' Place, she is getting the education she needs to make this dream a reality if she chooses.  Whatever she ends up becoming, her chances of being a productive member of her community are strong.

Kim wants the world to know she is a kind girl who loves singing, dancing and playing with her friends at Angels' Place.  She escaped the vicious loop of poverty, leaving behind a life of despair where she was often sick from malnutrition and starved of opportunity.  Today, her story is bright and full of hope where happy endings are truly possible.

There are hundreds of children just like Kim on our waiting list.  Smart, kind children who desperately long for the opportunity to write a better story for their lives.  Won't you consider helping one of them find their way to Angels' Place?  Visit our Ways to Help page to learn how.
